The 9th of April 2011 will be a date that will adorn history books for our generations to come. It will be a date of victory. A date that India got together, united as one, not because of a world cup victory in cricket, but because the nation had had enough of a rotting system and they had found a new hero to lead them. A new motive. The Lokpal Bill. It was the day that eventually the Indian Government succumbed to national protest. As the entire nation, young and old, men and women, actors to businessmen to the essential clerical staff and motormen chose to rally behind Anna Hazare and help take steps to realize a dream of a better India, I wondered how hypocritical this whole thing was.
I watched over 50 hours of live coverage across numerous News channels airing this historic 'march' to fight against corruption. As much as i was proud to see India come together and stand up, it really upset me that they were so narrow in thought. This whole 'drive' showed the true nature of the Indian Citizen. I really wanted to view my opines and that was why i chose to blog. But for the few or many who read this, please read the entire blog before closing your senses and branding me.
As much as I saw the entire nation rally around Anna Hazare, I also saw one of the saddest features of the Indian Citizen, the HERD Mentality. I have been part of many 'educated' conversations around the world by Indians all of whom said that they wanted to make a difference in their motherland, India. I recall when I was in the Middle East a couple of years ago the NRI community there even spoke of forming a new political party to clean up the system. I am proud of Anna Hazare who actually took the initiative where-in every other Indian (myself included) just thought about it or spoke up. He is a role model and I look up to him. I just hope no one steals his limelight for he deserves his successes for he fought for a cause he truly believed in and not because he wanted to be famous - else he wouldn't have been successful in accomplishing it.
But that is not what I wanted to write about. While I saw the whole nation come out in their support for the Great Man ... there were thousands (among them) who hadn't a clue what the cause was for ... all they knew was that they were fighting corruption - by fasting.! LoL It was sad ... many didn't know a thing about the Lokpal bill, for if they did, they would have realized that the bill, even if commissioned, wouldn't solve their purpose.! The bill is nothing but a watchdog and we all know that watchdogs can overlook instances on many an occasion. (You may at this point, argue that little drops of water make the mighty oceans and the seas, but there is a systematic flow in process which needs to be adhered to as well!)
The second point that saddened me was that Shri. Anna Hazare needed to go onto an infinite fast till death to have this sanctioned. Actually there are 2 points of sadness here, a) The Government needed someone plus the whole nation to back him to sanction a committee on drafting this bill an initiative they should have taken upon themselves to clean themselves and bring out a healthier picture to the nation, b) Shri Anna Hazare created a precedent that was wrong. Yes, you heard me, WRONG.!
This is where you, the reader, will turn furious in protest, but let me explain. Any citizen holding the government to stake indirectly threatening them to take a decision for something he feels strongly about is not correct. There are multiple repercussions which are often over looked while dealing with your personal motives. You may wonder what the hell i am rambling about. A few months ago, a lunatic threatened to fast onto death if Telengana was created. What you do not realize is that if anything were to have happened either that gentleman or to Shri Anna Hazare, there would have been a civil unrest across the country. I would have had both these gentleman arrested on grounds of creating a civic unrest. Both of them threatened the serenity of the country. Both had noble intentions, but chose to act in a way that could cause unrest and harm. I hope you understand the point I am making, if not, it is that you do not arm twist any government, let alone one that is hapless.
You may smile now as I use the word Hapless ... there is nothing to smile about. You ... yes YOU, should be ashamed of yourselves for you are the cause of our government being hapless. You have a right to vote and you chose to vote a million political parties into power making it impossible to form a government without coalition. Then instead of 'you' voting clean members into powers of position, you want the coalition to clean up the system, which is impossible, for there wouldn't be a government to run the country then. Evey time they want to clean the system up there will be objections from within. This explains why the Lokpal Bill hasn't been successful since 1965 when it was first brought up.
Let us look at the 2G scam. Many have claimed, with evidence (substantiated or not) that a certain southern political party, who is part of the ruling coalition was behind the whole scam. However, when approached to clean up the system, the party threatened to withdraw support, thereby making the government at the centre unstable. I am extremely certain that there will be members or our nation who were supporting Shri Anna Hazare taking a backwards stance when their political hero is found guilty of corruption and indicted through the Lokpal Bill.
If on the other hand we had one clear ruling party with a clear majority, it would be 'imaginably' possible to clean up their government as they had the power within themselves. That is when the Lokpal bill will be an effective tool for every citizen. Though India is a democratic country we need to curb the number of political parties. Digressing from my point, I would like to say we are a bunch of hypocrites as a majority of the political parties in the country we vote for aren't democratic in their set up, they as family run dynasties and this needs to be stopped. We need to vote for Democracy.
Indians needs to bring true democracy back to our country. Only then will we have professional politicos, Who in turn will clean up the system. The only way that this is possible is if our nation votes with the sense of necessity. The same necessity it showed while backing Shri Anna Hazare. However instead of backing a suicidal elder (who of-course had a noble cause) there are more effective and better ways to clean up the system.
Remember, the Lokpal bill will be ineffective, unless we have a strong government, by this i mean one party with a clear majority. Think about it.!
(Remember this blog is not about personal political choices and in no way I write this article to support any particular political party)
